He finished his PhD in Medicine and Surgery in 1993 at the Department of Medicine of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He started his practice in Hospital de la Cruz Roja in Tarragona, where he had a chance to work with the neurosurgery team of Dr. José Llovet i Tapies and the trauma and orthopedics team of Dr. Rafael Orozco i Delclós, who first described inserting a plate through a front incision in the cervical region of a trauma patient, nowadays, a technique used worldwide. From 1975 to 1990, Dr. Royo Salvador developed an assistential task at the Instituto Neurológico Municipal (INM) in Barcelona, he taught at the Department of Medicine at the former Hospital de Nuestra Señora del Mar, and run a private surgery. Since 1990 he has focused his activity exclusively on the INB, he has collaborated with several organizations and institutions, namely, Clínica Corachán, Clínica Tres Torres, Centro Cardiovascular Sant Jordi and Mutua Universal-Mutua General de Seguros. While he was at the INM, several spinal fusion techniques and some pioneering work was done regarding cervical arthrodesis, and it was Dr. Royo Salvador the first in Spain to perform a Roy-Camille lumbar instrumented arthrodesis, which was the first lumbar fusion with plate and screws at lumbar level. The INM was first in the application of percutaneous techniques like chemonucleolysis with chymopapain and percutaneous nucleotomy to treat vertebral disk herniation. After the presentation of the doctoral thesis "Aportación a la etiología de la siringomielia" ("Contribution to the etiology of syringomyelia") Dr. Royo Salvador started a new explanation and a new surgical treatment which was simple, efficient and with very little room for complication, published in several publications, focused on diseases such as syringomyelia, Arnold-Chiari malformation, scoliosis, basilar groove, platybasia, odontoid retrocession and kinking of the brainstem. He carried out for the first time the section of the filum terminale in Clínica Corachán. He was also the first in Catalonia to use the arthroscopy technique for lumbar disk herniation surgery. A conservative attitude toward the application of surgical techniques on the human body has led Dr.Royo Salvador’s surgery to treat spinal column patients with minimal and non aggressive surgery techniques obtaining exceptionally good results in comparison with the rest of equivalent publications. Currently, Dr. Royo Salvador works together with Dr. Almudena Ramon Cueto looking for new recovery techniques for patients with spinal cord and brain injury which have been considered irreversible up to present.
